Independent driving

Independent driving

From 4 October this year, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) are introducing a new ‘independent driving’ element to all driving tests.

Candidates will be asked to drive without step-by-step instruction from their examiner for about 10 minutes. This will mean either following a series of directions, following traffic signs, or a combination of both. To help candidates visualise the directions the examiner may show them a simple diagram.

It won’t be a fault if the wrong direction is taken as long as it was taken safely just like the current test rules. If any signs are not clear, then the examiner may have to intervene by giving direction. During the independent driving section the candidate can ask  for a reminder of the directions.
